Pure and San Fran

This past week (June 11 – June 15) I had the opportunity to attend one of my vendor conferences for the first time in my career, and to make it even better, the conference was held in San Francisco! The conference was Pure Storage’s //Accelerate 2017. This was a three-day event filled with a lot of information and collaboration with other vendors. I’m told that this is smaller than other vendor conferences, but seeing as I have nothing to compare it to personally, it seemed pretty large to me.

First, I’d like to get the negatives out-of-the-way.  The venue was…interesting. They held the event in what was previously an empty warehouse at Pier 70 (2), which gave it a nice juxtaposition with all the new high-tech hardware that was brought in for the conference; including the miles of cables and audio-visual equipment retrofitted for the presentations. The downside was that there was no running water within the building. As such they had to bring in portable toilets, albeit upscale ones, they were still undersized and not maintained very well; and at the end of the day they were still porta potties. Additionally this venue was rather far from the hotels they suggested that we book, which meant that we were relying on the bus schedule to go to and from the event. I feel it would have been better if the venue were more accessible to the accommodations. The session breakout rooms were an interesting take on the open concept that under other circumstances would probably have worked well. They were basically open sided shipping containers, which was a very nice tie in to the piers shipping history, but a poor choice for the sessions due to the high traffic area they were in. Sitting in one of these and attempting to listen to the presenter(s) was often difficult due to the high volume of background noise, even with their being some speakers configured within the space for amplification.

On the upside, I felt that the content provided, at least in the sessions I attended, was solid. I sat in on multiple sessions presented by industry experts such as Cody Hosterman (Twitter) and Pete Flecha (Twitter), both of whom I was looking forward to meeting, and was not let down. Additionally the third-party vendors that attended were all a good fit with the technology that Pure Storage develops, and the representatives that were on site for those vendors were all technologically knowledgeable for their respective products. In other words, they weren’t simply sales guys. The vendors all had some interesting swag and giveaways as well. I scored a couple of shirts (which make me a walking billboard, but still worth it) and some more interesting items; like an RC Car and a really nice UE Boom Bluetooth speaker that I am really looking forward to using. As I mentioned earlier the location of the venue in relation to the hotels was not ideal, and this lead me to believe there would be an issue with food as well; this was not the case however, as each day they had a number of food trucks that we could choose from. We were provided with tickets that we could redeem at the trucks for lunch. Later in the afternoon different trucks would return and provide strolling hors d’oeuvre that allowed for a further sampling of local street cuisine, and honestly, the food was incredible.

During the conference Pure also handed out the Accelerator Award:

The award recognizes Pure customers whose business transformation is accelerating the adoption of new storage infrastructures and operating models in their respective industries.

While I was attending as an employee of AAA-ACG, I could not help but feel a sense of pride when my former employer, Secure-24, was presented with this award. After all, I was part of the company last year when they adapted and implemented the technology, and honestly I still feel very close to the team their.

Secure-24 for delivering the highest levels of secure application hosting while providing one of the industry’s most stringent SLAs to a steadily expanding customer base.

Secure-24 is an industry leader in IT operations, application hosting and managed cloud services to enterprises worldwide. It has standardized on Pure Storage, and every time a customer is moved onto Pure, performance improvements of 3x-10x have been realized. This has allowed Secure-24 to strengthen its SLAs, encouraging customers to confidently outsource additional workloads.

In total I was in San Francisco for four days. This could have been cut down but there was some miscommunication and understanding about the conference in general. While the conference was three days long, the first day (Monday) was vendor and partner only, of which we are neither. This meant that I ended up with Monday to myself as I do not yet have the ability to work remotely, both in terms of not having a laptop and not having VPN access. So I was able to take in some sightseeing on Monday, and considering this was my first time in California as a whole, i did take advantage of this. I took a guided bus tour of San Francisco which included a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge. I also visited the famous Pier 39 and FIsherman’s Wharf, both of which were pretty neat and would require further exploration. While on Pier 39 I also took advantage of (thanks to Melissa’s persuasion) a boat tour of the San Francisco Bay which included a closer pass by of Alcatraz Island! The next time I get to take a trip out to San Fran. I fully intend to take a tour of Alcatraz in addition to spending more time on the piers! Also on this short boat tour we went over to K Dock and saw the famous Sea Lions!  Additionally, I would like to have the time to look around the fort locations near the Golden Gate Bridge, this alone could take multiple days! I also saw, but did not ride, the cable cars. I think I made the most of the unexpected free time that I had, but it made me realize that I need to add San Francisco to the long list of places to visit with Melissa and Kylie!

All in all I’d say it was a very good trip. The conference, overall, I thought was very good. That being said, I am not sure if I would attend this one again next year. While I am a huge fan of Pure Storage and their products, their products are currently limited. They perform great, and are very easy to use in comparison to other vendors, but it will take some new products or maybe additional industry disruptions on their part to deem a trip to this conference necessary again. What it has done, however, is made me even more interested in attending other vendor conferences. Both for the comparison and the networking and knowledge acquisition. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next year brings and how the industry evolves.

And We’re Back

We were all up bright and early and back on the road by 6am today, it was a long drive made even longer due to my back. Seeing as I was going to be doing some of the driving I couldn’t take any of the muscle relaxers Mom gave me. Thankfully Melissa was able to do some driving and I was able to rest a bit and change my position to relax my back. Kylie, as usual, was completely great during the drive, she played with her Leapster and did other activities she brought with her. We made numerous stops to stretch out my back and get fuel and eat, we made it home about 7:30 though, so, we still made really good time. We unloaded the truck and took 3 bins out of the trailer, but that was all my back could handle for now so we will need to finish unloading the rest tomorrow.

We’re Here

Turns out the Inn had a free breakfast in their lobby, so we were able to eat there this morning before getting back on the road. It was the type of breakfast you would expect from an Inn; donuts, cereal, toast, juice, coffee, etc. It was enough, however, to ensure we had something in us and could start right out on the road. We just missed my goal of 7am but only slightly and only because when I tried to check us out there was only one clerk working and he was getting a family from Germany checked in. Even so we were still on the road by 7:30 with no rushing or issues, so it was a good start.

We go to Mom’s (Nana’s) apartment about at 2pm, we would have been there a bit sooner but I stopped first at the cemetery so Kylie could see where Papa King was buried. I explained to her that this was a monument where we could come to visit Papa King’s name and remember him. When she gets older I will further explain about cemeteries, but at the time I did not want to try to explain all of that. In any event was a very solemn moment and Kylie asked if any of her other family was here, so I should her Great Grandpa’s and Cousin Darrin’s markers as well. She got very sad and said she missed her family, so at the point I felt it was time for us to go on to happy places.

When we got to Nana’s Kylie was very excited to see her and Great Nan and everyone else she knew she was going to get to see. When Nana opened the door the happiness, joy, and excitement made the long trip and the tinge of sadness more than worth it!

Start Your Engines

Our NY trip began a day earlier than planned as we decided to leave tonight as opposed to waiting until tomorrow morning. We are already packed and ready so leaving tonight and getting a hotel and an early start tomorrow means getting there earlier and spending more time with the family. Seeing as this is going to be a very short trip anyway, the more time we get to see everyone the better. The plain was to get a hotel out near Buffalo, making half of the trip today and the rest tomorrow. Kylie is very excited about spending the night in a hotel and can’t wait to get there. We ended up staying at a Rodeway Inn just east of Buffalo getting there at about 11:30pm (6.5 hours into the trip) and it wasn’t bad for the price ($80) but I have definitely stayed in better, then again I have also seen much worse! Tomorrow I hope to be back on the road by 7am.

Back from NY and PA

Melissa and I just got back from our trip to NY, and we both agree that not taking tomorrow off from work was a mistake. We are both very tired from a very busy few days. For me, I have been traveling for the past week and am pretty worn out from it all.

On 5/17 I left to go to Philadelphia again for another DR test for work. The test went fine and I even had the opportunity to catch up with an old college friend, Jess, whom I hadn’t seen in just about 10 years! That was really cool and we are looking forward to keeping better in touch now that we have gotten back in touch. We had a lot of catching up to do. It’s amazing how much happens in 10 years. I returned from Philadelphia on Wednesday 5/20 and had to start packing in preparation for Melissa and I leaving early Thursday morning to go out to NY.

We left a little later on 5/21 then we wanted to, but that is because we were up later packing than we had expected. Mainly because we had to do laundry because of my Philadelphia trip in addition to the normal packing steps. The ride was nice, especially for Melissa as she had never been further east than Sandusky, OH. Knowing this I opted to take the scenic route out through lower NY and came in through the mountains. The scenery on that route is a lot prettier and more exciting than the way we came home, which is straight out the thruway.

While out there I ended up having to rebuild Mom’s hard drive as it crashed shortly before I arrived. I guess that is better than failing after I left though. This made for a couple of very long nights for me, as I needed to make certain I got this fixed before I left. Also while out there I tried to show Melissa around as much as possible and spend time with family, we even got to go see Star Trek and Terminator: Salvation at the old Hi-Way Drive In where I used to work for a few summers.

On Saturday the 23rd, though, we spent the day in celebration with an old friend of mine, Stefan, at his wedding. This is actually the reason that I went out to NY to begin with, as he and his now wife Kate, gave me the honor of being their wedding photographer. Over the course of this one very busy day I took over 1300 pictures! That is by far a personal record. This makes the third wedding that I have taken pictures out. I am starting to think I should make a side business out of this.

Along the picture taking note, we also stopped by a couple of cemetaries and walked around them and took some pictures. This is something of a hobby of mine. I find the old large headstones to be remarkable and beautiful, and the detail that goes into some of the newer monuments are simply amazing. Hopefully it wont take me too long to get these pictures processed and into the gallery (who am I kidding? It will take a while).

On Sunday night we went up to my brother’s camp site and spent a very nice time with the family up there. Melissa was kind enough to take many pictures of me with my family, which I am very thankful for as I often end up staying behind the camera and not getting in the pictures. (I will do my best to get these off the camera and up on the site also, as I know I have a number of pictures that they family wants.) It was a very fun night, and if I lived closer I know I would spend a lot of time up there as I find it very peaceful and relaxing to be at camp sites and out in nature in general.

Today we left bright and early and drove back home via the thruway, as I mentioned earlier. Melissa agrees with me that the scenic route out was much better and she is very happy I took her that way so she could see the mountains and such. Hopefully the next I go out not only will it be for an actual vacation but it will be a little slower paced and I will be able to bring Kylie. As I am sure she would like to go out there again, and I know for a certainty that everyone out there would love for her to come out.
