Our first fall…

Well today Kylie had her first fall. “How can this be?” you are wondering considering she hasn’t even started to crawl yet, let alone walk. Well allow me to answer as it is really very simple…she fell off the couch. Yep, that’s right, she fell off the couch. “How did that happen” you ask? Good question, but I am not really certain I can answer that in complete certainty because I was not in the room when it happened, which of course is why it happened. See I had placed her in her boppy on the couch, as I have done many times before, and then went into the kitchen to prepare her bottle. It was during this time that I heard a little thump. My first thought was “Oh God, please don’t let that be what I think it was” and then I looked out of the kitchen and into the living room. Well low-and-behold there was my little girl laying on the floor on her back partly under the coffee table just kind of looking around. Well my heart jumped and I walked over to her, and went to pick her up and hold her, well I took one step and she saw me…and then proceeded to cry. So I picked her up and held her and made sure she was ok and then proceeded to finish making her a bottle. She is fine of course and this is only the first of many more falls to come. But I have now learned a valuable lesson, and that lesson is that she is now to the point where it is not safe to place her on the couch in her boppy without being right there, as she can roll and or fidget out and away from it. “We fall so we can learn to pick ourselves back up.”

[EDIT: 11-01-05]
It turns out that she does have a slight bump on her head and maybe a slight bruise but all in all she is no worse for wear and is doing just fine.

4 Month Check Up

Kylie had her 4 month check up today and the doctor is pleased with her progress. She is now a healthy 16.05 pounds and 25.25 inches long (so just over 2 feet tall). In addition to this her head is 15 inches around. The doctor did make a comment in regards to her cradle cap but was pleased with how we were treating it. In addition to this we were given the ok to get her ears pierced, so as soon as I can scrap together some money and find some time, I think we are going to go and do that. This way it will be done before she reaches the stage where she is constantly pulling on her ears. her next appointment is in January for her 6 month check up and shots, so I will post more then unless something happens in the mean time.

360 degree roll

Well it finally happened; a mile stone has been reached. Today at about 10:30pm Kylie finally rolled from her back to her stomach…and then back to her back. This is totally awesome! My personal hope is now that she can achieve this on her own, she will not fuss so much when she gets “stuck” on her stomach. I am sure this will not happen for a while though, not until she completely masters this new ability anyway. Of course then I will have to watch out for her rolling around the place.

Next comes the crawling. This is something she has kind of been working on as well. When she gets “stuck” on her stomach we have a tendency to leave her their for a few minutes, mainly to give her time to build her neck muscles by holding her head up to look around. However, we have noticed that if she is really impatient she tends to bring her legs up under herself and then kick her legs back out in a crawling motion. The end result of this is that she pushes herself slightly forward, but not quit crawling. So I am sure that will follow soon.

On a side note the symptoms of teething continue to plague us on a daily basis. Kylie continues to become fussy for no reason and the only way to remotely calm her is to give her a chilled teething ring or to place a small amount of Baby Orajel on her gums. In addition to this she is drooling like it is her job. She will soak an entire bib in 10 minutes, and forget about the top half of a shirt, that doesn’t stand a chance.

Rolling and other stuff

So yeah, I meant to post this like 2 weeks ago, but never got around to it.

Well Kylie finally started rolling from her back to her stomach about a day or two after she was 3 months old. When she first finally accomplished it she frightened herself and ended up crying. So I rolled back onto her back and let her know just how exciting this event was. It took her a little while to get used to rolling over and not startling herself but she managed. So she now rolls from her back to her stomach towards her right side. In fact on many occasions we find her asleep in her crib on her stomach now. She still gets a little frustrated after a few minutes of being on her stomach as she is still unable to roll herself back over. However, after she is rolled back onto her back she promptly rolls over on her stomach again, almost like it is a game. To the point where sometimes to prevent her from fussing and rolling over we have to place a pillow next to her on her right side to keep her from rolling over.

But wait, “what happens when she starts to roll over on her left side” you ask? Good question as a couple of days ago she started to attempt to roll over on her left side and as of last night (in her sleep) she has accomplished it. I have yet to see her roll over on her left side yet while awake, but am sure she will not have any issues doing it. Seeing as she is still fussing somewhat when she gets “stuck” on her stomach for more than a few minutes unless she is sleeping, I guess we will just have to play the roll over game for a while longer. I must admit it will be nice when she learns how to roll herself back over on her back.

In other Kylie related news; I have yet to scan all the pictures and such (still sorry Mom) but am working on it. I have a few more rolls to scan and then prepare the pictures for the site, and then they will go up. I expect that when this happens there will be a ton of images thrown up at once and then I will later go back and handle all the labeling and such.

On another note, she is showing early signs of teething. Mainly the constant drooling and fussing that only seems to be calmed when something cold is placed in her mouth. So we have taken to keeping at least two teething rings in the refrigerator for these instances.

She ahs also grown into the next stage of diapers and a lot of her 3 month old clothes are starting to become too small for her (depending on the cut). She has her next doctor’s appointment towards the end of this month and then I will be able to provide more information as to her weight and length and such, but as of right now let me just say she is getting big.

3 Months today

Kylie is 3 months old today! I know I have a ton of pictures I need to get off of the digital and into the gallery (sorry Mom), but it just seems like I don’t have the time lately, mainly because I try to catch up on sleep whenever I can.

Well let’s see what has happened in the last month… She has out grown her bassinet (and a number of clothes) as she is now weighing in at over 14 pounds and has moved to her crib in her own room. She handled the transition very well and we are very happy with that. In addition to this she has started to attempt to roll over, although she is not quit there yet.

We have decided to try and start to teach her a few words in American Sign Language as studies have shown that Babies who learn to sign not only learn to communicate faster non-verbally but also tend to learn to speak sooner as well. We have start off with a few words such as “Mommy”, “Daddy”, “Milk”, and “Change”. We chose these words because they are words that we can easily work into a normal conversation with her. The book says that babies will start to attempt to communicate using sign at around 5 to 6 months but that the sooner we can introduce them the better.

In addition to this Kylie has already been introduced to classical music through Baby Einstein‘s Baby Beethoven: Symphony of Fun and she really seems to enjoy it. I am hoping to get more of the Baby Einstein videos and recommend them highly.

Kylie continues to enjoy the pool and bath time and I have a feeling that, like her Daddy, she will be swimming before she is walking. Along the lines of locomotion, however, she has learned that while lying on her back she can stretch her legs out and push herself backwards along the floor, although she doesn’t do this often.

Princess has also finally come to terms with the fact that Kylie is here to stay, as she no longer runs away when Kylie is brought near her and will even allow Kylie to pet her. In fact the other day I was sitting with Kylie in my lap in my recliner and Princess jumped up and sat with us for a little while after nuzzling Kylie’s foot in way of greeting. This was a first for Princess mainly because the chair is much smaller than the couch and Princess was ok with Kylie being up there with her.

2 Months and 11 Days

That is how old Kylie is as of today. I meant to write this up 11 days ago, but I have just been too busy and too tired when I had the time to do it. Plus 11 days ago we were in Philly for a wedding and I did not have access. So let’s see if I can do a little recap here.

For starters she is doing very well. Like I said, on the day Kylie turned 2 months old we were in Philly for a friends wedding. Earlier that day we visited Benjamin Franklin’s house (or at least where his house was), the Liberty Bell, Congress Hall, and the outside of Independence Hall. Should I ever get around to scanning those pictures, I will post them in the gallery. (NOTE: even though some of the pictures contain Kylie, i.e. her in front of the Liberty Bell, these pictures will most likely be posted under trips.) She was very good in the car for what turned out to be a 9 hour trip each way, only fussing when she started to get hungry.

Last week she had her 2 month check up, and at that time received 5 vaccines in 4 shots. I must say that she took the shots very well, which is good seeing as she goes back in October for 4 more. At the time of her doctors’ visit she weighed 14 pounds and 1 ounce, but I am convinced that she actually weighs more than that now. She has already gotten too big for her bassinet (it says that a baby should only be in it up to 15 pounds) and has moved into her crib.

The cat seems to be more and more accepting of Kylie, as the other day I helped her pet the cat and she did not run away when Kylie touched her. This made me happy because Princess has been slow in adjusting to the presence of Kylie. Recently however, she has gotten better at not always running away when Kylie is around and has even been seen nuzzling Kylie’s feet.

Lately she seems to be showing signs of teething; mainly she will become fussy and start to cry for seemingly no reason. Sometimes letting her suck on a chilled teething ring seems to clam her down, but yesterday even that didn’t work, however placing a very small amount of Baby Orajel on her gums did. She has also become very good at keeping me up in the morning when I get off of work and am in charge of watching her. As such I have not been getting much sleep lately, but that’s ok I will adjust.

Yesterday we finally got around to taking her to have professional pictures taken as well. From we saw of the digital proofs they look to be very good. They will come in sometime around the 21st of September, once they do I am sure I will scan them and place them in the gallery as well.

One Month Old

Two days ago (on the 20th) my daughter, Kylie turned 1 month old! This first month has gone by very fast and has found many firsts.

Including her first hair wash in the sink:

and her first meeting with Great Grandma and Great Grandpa Waun who were up from Florida:

and her first nap with Daddy:

and her first bottle feeding:

Of course after her umbilical cord came off she was allowed her first bath:

And perhaps one of the most memorable moments, her first meeting with Grandma and Grandpa King, they drove all the way out from NY just to meet her!

It has been a busy first month for Kylie to say the least. She hasn’t actually met Princess (her cat) yet, as Princess isn’t quite sure what to think of her yet. However, Princess gets a little closer each day and seems to accept her being around just a little bit more. I am sure that eventually Princess will fully adjust, although a lot of progress has been made, as now Princess will hop up on the couch and sit next to me and Kylie as long as Kylie doesn’t fuss.Oh yes, it has been a very eventful month!

16 Days and Counting

Well Kylie is 16 days old today and what a busy day it has been. Slightly after midnight, after one of her normal nightly feedings, Mommy noticed that her umbilical cord had fallen off. This was rather fortunate as today was also her very first doctor’s visit. The doctor gave her a clean bill of health and even took care of finalizing the umbilical cord by cauterizing it with some silver nitrate. Kylie now weighs 10lbs 1 ounce and the doctor is happy with this 1lb 9 ounce gain. This was good news as Mommy had been worried that perhaps she was not getting enough food. There were a few other things that we had some questions about, but everything is normal and all is well. The next doctors visit is looking to be interesting as Kylie will be receiving some shots. So we will get to see how she reacts to a needle.

My Daughter is Born!

My daughter Kylie was born on June 20, 2005 at 9:32 am, weighing in at 8lbs 8oz and 21.5 inches long. She is home and everything is going well so far. She was a nice late Father’s Day gift. She now has her own category and I will attempt to remember to post updates as the days go on. This is sure to be one heck of an adventure!
