AIM Terms of Service

So…you use AOL’s instant messenger service (AIM) huh? Well so do a bunch of other people. But, have you actually read their Terms of Service (TOS)? Of course not! No one does. I mean, hell, it’s five (5) printed pages long! Well I wonder how many people would stop using the service if they did? Why do I say that you ask? Well allow me to exoplain. The first paragraph of the terms of service starts off like most others, staing that “You Must agree to these Terms of Service to Use AIM Products.” No big deal there right? I mean that is pretty standard after all. Well where it really gets interesting is down around the thirteenth (13) section, the one entitled “Content You Post”, which reads:

Content You Post
You may only post Content that you created or which the owner of the Content has given you. You may not post or distribute Content that is illegal or that violates these Terms of Service. By posting or submitting Content on any AIM Product, you represent and warrant that (i) you own all the rights to this Content or are authorized to use and distribute this Content on the AIM Product and (ii) this Content does not and will not infringe any copyright or any other third-party right nor violate any applicable law or regulation.

Although you or the owner of the Content retain ownership of all right, title and interest in Content that you post to any AIM Product, AOL owns all right, title and interest in any compilation, collective work or other derivative work created by AOL using or incorporating this Content. In addition, by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the Content or to be compensated for any such uses.

Now, if you carefully read the second paragraph of this section, it basically states that; although the content you post (messages you write, and all content contained within them) are technically your own, by using the AIM service, you grant AOL and everybody it is associated with the right to do what ever they choose to with that information. And further more, the last two (2) sentences of this paragraph really ring out in my mind:

You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the Content or to be compensated for any such uses.

Not only do you automatically waive your right to privacy, but you also have no say in how they will use your information nor will you ever receive any payment, ever! Now, the lack of privacy I might be able to deal with, but the thought that they could use my ideas, thoughts, or exspressions to further their profit and I wouldn’t receive any sort of compensation, that just pisses me off!

Where Have You Been?

I would someday like to visit every state in the nation. I stumbled upon a site to help keep track of what states I have been to and what ones I still need to visit. It even generated a nice little list for me. This should help me in my goal, and from the looks of it I have a long way to go. *sigh*

bold the states you’ve been to, underline the states you’ve lived in and italicize the state you’re in now…

Alabama / Alaska / Arizona / Arkansas / California / Colorado / Connecticut / Delaware / Florida / Georgia / Hawaii / Idaho / Illinois / Indiana / Iowa / Kansas / Kentucky / Louisiana / Maine / Maryland / Massachusetts / Michigan / Minnesota / Mississippi / Missouri / Montana / Nebraska / Nevada / New Hampshire / New Jersey / New Mexico / New York / North Carolina / North Dakota / Ohio / Oklahoma / Oregon / Pennsylvania / Rhode Island / South Carolina / South Dakota / Tennessee / Texas / Utah / Vermont / Virginia / Washington / West Virginia / Wisconsin / Wyoming / Washington D.C /

Come Clean

I found a site this evening called Come Clean. It is basically an online confessional. You can choose to leave a confession or to view the confessions of others. I have been watching confessions now for at least 10 minutes, and I have to admit some of them are really funny. The presentation is pretty cool too. It is done in Flash and shows the confessions as being written on the palm of a pair of female hands. Each confessions is then subsequently washed away in a sink. The entire thing is rather interesting.

Photo Gallery

I have been working on implementing a photo gallery into the site for a couple of days now. Tonight I finally added the link. The gallery is something that will get updated and re-aranged at irregular intervals as I take new photos and get old photos scanned in. It can be found under “Links” in the menu.

It is created using a program called Gallery which allows for the creation of individual albums wich can contain photos or other albums or a mixture of both. This allows for pictures to be grouped by simalarity and/or relavence. I disabled the feature that would allow viewers to make comments about pictures, but that is another feature of the program. It would also allow for me to allow other people to create albums and such, but why would I want someone elses photos up here?

Anyway…it is up and running and sure to be a part of the site that changes without notice and at odd intervals.

Extream Shredding

While “working” this evening/morning I came across the site for Shredding Systems Inc. This company is an industry leader in, well, shredding. They shred pretty much anything. If it needs shredding they will design, build, and implement a system to shred it. We are not just talking paper here, thats amature stuff. If you go here you can watch videos of some of there systems at work shredding a lot of stuff. Sure there is some paper in there, but there is also steel drums, oversized tires, whole computers, oh yeah and refrigerators and washing machines too! If you want to see some heavey duty shredding, check this place out!

Colorgenics

I found this site called Colorgenics the other day while surfing the other night at work. It is basically a mood analysis based off color selection. I thought it was kinda neat. Here is what my first results were:

Enough is enough – you feel frustrated and rejected. You are fighting back and the going is tough. It would be just wonderful if you could be left in peace.

You are a leader in every sense of the word. You know where you are going and you know what you need to do in order to get there. You exercise an inherent initiative in overcoming obstacles and difficulties. You either hold, or wish to achieve, a position of authority by means of which full control can be exerted over events.

You honestly believe that your hopes and ideas are realistic, but there seems to be no one around to give you the necessary reassurance and encouragement. You are egocentric. You believe that you are always ‘right’ – well maybe you are but you have a short fuse and are likely to take offense for the slightest reason.

As of late, you have been experiencing untold stress and this is a result of continuous frustration. You haven’t been taking care of all your physical needs and it’s beginning to show. It would seem that you have a need to find someone to whom you can really relate – someone perhaps whose standards are as high as your own. You want to be different – to be individualistic – to stand out from the common herd. Your inherent control of your sensual instincts is restricting your ability to give yourself to open up freely but this being on your own, being lonely, often makes you feel the need to give up some of your strict standards to surrender to the general flow – to be like everyone else; a part of the herd. Deep down you regard such instincts as weaknesses to be overcome. You would like to be loved or admired for yourself alone. You demand recognition and tender loving care.

There is that inherent fear that you may be prevented from attaining the better things in life – those things that you consider essential to your well-being. So you are prepared to try everything to prove to yourself that whatever you do or try will go wrong. This destructive attitude could come under the heading of ‘a self fulfilling prophecy’. This belittling yourself is your method of disguising how hopeless and what a waste of time you feel that everything is. So now turn it about. As you ‘think’, so you are… So ‘imagine’ yourself successful. ‘Pretend’, ‘act it out’ and you may be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.

Its interesting how these things work. Its like subscribing to a astrology site and having your horoscope sent to you everyday, sometimes there on target and sometimes not. The trick is to be vague and then the result could apply to anything.

Sir Bill Gates?

It appears that Bill Gates is to receive an “honorary knighthood by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth.”

He will become a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, an honor that dates back to 1917 … Among the pomp and grandeur of the formal state rooms at [Buckingham Palace], Gates will kneel in front of the sovereign, who will gently tap him on the shoulder with a sword.

Although he will get nighted today, it turns out he will be denyed the honorary title of “Sir” as he is not a Briton nor a citizen of the Commonwealth and “that honor does not extend to other nationalities.” Well I guess money can’t buy everything after all.

Montage-a-google

I found this site while at work today/last night that uses the google image search to create a montage using images found during a search for an image you specify. The way you use the site is relatively self explainitory. I thought it was kinda neat that someone put this together.

The program uses 20 images that google image search kicks back as search results for the description you enter. You then can press the “create montage” button to have it automatically create a montage using these 20 images. The advanced options allow you to set the grid size and if you wish to use the original high resolution images or the google thumbnail images. Each image in the montage acts as a ling back to the original image, which allows you to see the full image.
