MIT Boredom
It is common knowledge that MIT turns out some of the best engineers around, but ever wonder what they do during there spare time while at scho0l? Well some of them managed to get the school to provide them with the blueprints to one of the dorm buildings and do some wiring for them. What this turned into was the bathroom monitor. Thats right, they set up a webserver to display what bathrooms were available or in use in their dorm building.
Kevin Smith
Being a big Kevin Smith fan, I was kinda happy to come across his Online Diay. It is literally a daily account of what goes on in Kevin’s life. Though I have not read anything more than the post he has for Sunday, I still think it will be interesting. Seeing as he has written a number of movies that became overnight cult classics, it will be neat to see what makes him tick. Of course, what I think is also cool about his site is the fact that it, too, is powered by WordPress.
Lightsaber – a history
So in a previous post I mentioned a link to an article on how a Lightsaber works. Well tonight I have stubled upon this Wikipedia article which touches on the Lightsaber’s history, construction, use and other things as well. As with the previous article, it is an interesting read, and once again I am sure their are some die hard fans out there that will find something wrong.
How a Lightsaber Works
With the upcoming release of Star Wars Episode III, the electronics channel of How Stuff Works has an interesting article on How A Lightsaber Works. If nothing eles it is an interesting read. I don’t know where they got all the information on the subject, but for myself it is pretty cool. I am sure, however, that there is some fanatical Star Wars fan out there who will read it and freak out because something is wrong.
Letter to Ikea
I know of people who have driven literally hundreds of miles to shop at an Ikea store, and have said they would do it again. I, personally, would not do that for any store, but thats just me. Having never been to an Ikea myself, and only hearing about them from friends, I found this letter to Ikea from a “pleased consumer” rather entertaining. Odds are, you will too.
Pepsi Can Stove
I don’t camp much, nor claim to know a lot about true camping, especially as when I do camp it is usually some place with some kind of plumbing, but I do know that certain things are needed when you do camp. When thing is a way to cook and prepare food. This is usually acomplished by some type of a fire pit, but why not a home made Pepsi can stove? Yep thats right, a stove made out of a Pepsi can, well ok three pepsi cans to be exact. I think this is really neat, and might even make one.

No Oil by 2050
MSN Money has an interesting article about the U.S.’s ability to stop using oil by 2050. The article goes on to explain that this could be possible if we just got “back on the efficiency-improvement path we were on when we responded to the first and second OPEC oil price shocks in 1973 and 1979.” The first, and largest, step would be to “make cars, trucks, houses and buildings more energy efficient.”
Amory Lovins, author of “Winning the Oil End Game” states that we could “apply energy efficiency to end our dependence on oil.”
Not just foreign oil, mind you, all oil. In the process, we can revolutionize (and save) our automobile industry, create a million jobs, strengthen our economy, end the flow of oil money that funds terrorism and win enduring national security.
In “Winning the Oil Endgame,” Lovins shows us the path to reduce our oil consumption.
How much? How fast? Think about these figures:
* We could reduce the amount we import from the Persian Gulf by 2015.
* We could use less oil by 2025 than we used in 1970.
* We could import no oil at all by 2040.
* We could use no oil at all by 2050.
A lot of the information supporting this theory, including a copy of the book, can be obtained from Oilendgame.org.
This all sounds like a great idea, but something tells me it would never actually happen due to the large oil companies putting a fit, and then it would become politics. We all know the oil companies spend money on lobbying for Presidents who support their agenda, and at least one of our recent Presidents has ties to oil….
